A simple way to change a plain background
Many profile photos, product shots and selfies are taken against a plain wall, a white sheet or a studio backdrop. If that background is a single, fairly even colour, you don’t need an AI background remover to replace it. This tool uses colour selection: you tap the background, it finds every connected pixel of a similar colour, and swaps them for whatever you choose.
Because it works on colour rather than sending your image to a cloud model, it is instant, private and free. It is ideal for turning a dull grey wall into a bright brand gradient behind your profile picture, or giving a product photo a clean pastel backdrop.
How to change a background colour
- Upload a photo with a plain, evenly lit background. The tool auto-selects the corner colour as a starting point.
- Tap the background in the preview to pick the exact colour you want to replace.
- Adjust tolerance until the whole background is covered but your subject isn’t. Use edge softness to smooth the outline.
- Choose the new background: a gradient preset, a custom two-colour gradient, a solid colour, a pattern (dots, stripes, checker, grid, hearts, stars) or transparent.
- Download the PNG at full quality.
Getting clean edges
The Connected background only mode (on by default) fills outward from where you tap and from the image edges, so colours inside your subject that happen to match the background — a white T-shirt against a white wall, for example — are left alone. Switch to Every matching pixel if the background is split into separate areas, such as the gaps between arms and body.
Start with a low tolerance and raise it slowly. If you see a coloured halo around hair or shoulders, increase edge softness a little. Photos with strong shadows on the wall may need two passes, or a slightly higher tolerance.
What works best
- Plain walls and backdrops in a single colour give the cleanest results.
- Good contrast between subject and background helps — avoid a beige jumper on a beige wall.
- Even lighting reduces gradients and shadows on the background.
- Busy scenes (trees, rooms, crowds) are not suitable; this is a colour tool, not an AI cut-out.
💡 After swapping the background, take the image into the Profile Picture Maker to crop it into a circle and add a ring.
