Why your profile picture matters
Your profile picture (PFP) is the most-seen image you will ever post. It appears next to every comment, every Story, every DM and every Reel, usually at a tiny size of around 110 pixels across. A good PFP is recognisable at a glance: a well-lit face or logo, centred, with a background that separates it from the busy feed around it.
That is why so many creators and brands add a coloured ring or a soft gradient behind their photo. It creates contrast, makes the avatar pop in a list of comments and gives your account a consistent, branded look. This free profile picture maker lets you do exactly that in a few taps, right in your browser.
How to make a profile picture in 5 steps
- Upload a photo — tap the upload box or drag an image in. JPG, PNG and WEBP all work, and the file never leaves your device.
- Position your face — drag the photo inside the circle and use the zoom slider until your face fills about two-thirds of the frame.
- Choose a background — pick none, a solid colour, a ready-made gradient (Instagram, sunset, ocean, neon and more) or build a custom two-colour gradient.
- Add a ring — select a solid or gradient ring, then adjust its thickness and the white gap between the ring and your photo.
- Download — tap Download PNG to save a crisp 1080×1080 image, then upload it as your new profile photo.
The right profile picture size for every platform
Every major platform crops avatars into a circle from a square image, so a single high-resolution square works everywhere. Instagram displays profile photos at roughly 110×110 pixels on mobile and stores them at up to 320×320. TikTok recommends at least 200×200, YouTube asks for 800×800, and LinkedIn and X look sharpest at 400×400 or more.
Exporting at 1080×1080, as this tool does, gives every platform plenty of pixels to downscale from, which keeps edges and faces sharp after compression. Keep important details inside the central circle — anything in the corners will be cut off.
Tips for a profile picture that stands out
- Use high contrast. A bright ring on a dark photo, or a dark outfit against a pastel gradient, is easier to spot in a feed.
- Fill the frame. Crop close so your face, not the background, takes up most of the circle.
- Match your brand colours. Use the same gradient on your PFP, highlight covers and thumbnails for a cohesive profile.
- Keep it consistent. Using the same picture across Instagram, TikTok and YouTube helps followers recognise you everywhere.
- Look at the camera. Eye contact and natural light build trust faster than heavy filters.
