What is engagement rate?

Engagement rate measures how actively your audience interacts with your content. It is the most widely used metric for judging account health, and brands use it to decide which creators to work with — often valuing it more than raw follower count.

The standard formula is: Engagement rate = (likes + comments) ÷ followers × 100, averaged across your recent posts. Many marketers also include saves and shares, which are strong signals of valuable content. When you have access to insights, calculating by reach instead of followers shows how engaging your content is for the people who actually saw it.

How to calculate your engagement rate

  1. Pick Instagram or TikTok.
  2. Enter your follower count.
  3. Choose how many recent posts to analyse — 10 to 12 gives a reliable average.
  4. Add up the likes and comments (and optionally saves and shares) across those posts and enter the totals.
  5. Switch to “Reach” if you want to calculate by reach and have the total reach for those posts.

What is a good engagement rate?

Engagement naturally falls as accounts grow, so compare yourself with accounts of a similar size. As rough industry guides for Instagram: nano accounts (1K–10K) often see 2.5–5%, micro (10K–50K) 1.8–3.5%, mid-tier (50K–500K) 1.2–2.5%, macro (500K–1M) 1–2% and mega accounts (1M+) 0.7–1.6%. TikTok engagement typically runs higher because videos are shown to non-followers on the For You page.

These ranges vary by niche, content format and how they are measured, so treat them as a guide. Your own trend over time is the most useful benchmark of all.

Engagement rate FAQ

How do you calculate Instagram engagement rate?

Add the likes and comments on your recent posts, divide by the number of posts, divide by your follower count and multiply by 100.

Is engagement rate by reach better?

It is more accurate for judging content quality because it only counts people who saw the post. Engagement by followers is easier to compare between accounts.

Do I need to log in to Instagram?

No. You enter the numbers yourself, so nothing is connected to your account.

Should I include saves and shares?

If you have them from your insights, yes — they are strong engagement signals. Just be consistent when comparing over time.
