Why the first 3 seconds decide everything
On TikTok, Reels and Shorts, viewers decide whether to keep watching in a second or two. If they swipe away, the algorithm assumes the video isn’t interesting and shows it to fewer people. A strong hook — the first line you say or show on screen — is the single biggest lever for watch time and reach.
Great hooks create an open loop: they promise something valuable or surprising, and the only way to get it is to keep watching. This generator combines proven hook formulas with your own topic, audience and pain point to give you a list of ready-to-use openers.
How to generate hooks
- Enter your topic (e.g. “meal prep”) and audience (e.g. “busy mums”).
- Describe their pain point and an action or experiment you tried.
- Pick a hook style or leave it on All for a varied list.
- Tap “Generate” for new combinations.
- Tap any hook to copy it, then use it as your on-screen text, spoken opener or caption first line.
The six hook types explained
- Curiosity: hint at a secret or surprising result.
- Stop the scroll: call out a specific viewer directly (“Stop scrolling if you…”).
- List / value: promise a number of tips or a complete guide.
- Story: open with a turning point or before-and-after.
- Bold / controversial: challenge a common belief (keep it honest).
- Question: ask something your audience instantly wants answered.
Test different types on similar videos and compare the average watch time in your analytics to find what your audience responds to.
Tips for delivering a hook
- Say it and show it. Put the hook as on-screen text and speak it at the same time.
- Cut the intro. No “hey guys” — start mid-sentence.
- Deliver on the promise. Clickbait that doesn’t pay off hurts trust and retention.
- Keep text in the safe zone so buttons don’t cover it — check with the Safe Zone Checker.
💡 Reuse your best hook as the first line of your caption — it’s what people see before “more”.
