What makes a great username?
Your username is your address on social media. The best handles are short, memorable, easy to spell out loud and consistent across platforms. They often combine your name with a word that signals your niche — like @maya.bakes or @thelondonlifter — so people instantly know what you post.
The hard part is that so many good names are taken. This generator mixes your name with niche word lists, prefixes and separators to produce lots of fresh options quickly, then checks each one against the platform’s rules.
How to find a username
- Enter your name or nickname.
- Choose your niche — aesthetic, fitness, food, travel, gaming, beauty, business, pets or general.
- Select the platform so the length limit is right (Instagram 30, TikTok 24, YouTube 30, X 15).
- Add extra words you like and choose a separator style (none, dots or underscores).
- Copy your favourites and search for them in the app to check availability.
Username rules by platform
- Instagram: up to 30 characters; letters, numbers, periods and underscores; can’t start or end with a period or use two in a row.
- TikTok: 2–24 characters; letters, numbers, underscores and periods; can’t end with a period.
- YouTube handle: 3–30 characters; letters, numbers, underscores, hyphens and periods.
- X: 4–15 characters; letters, numbers and underscores only.
If you want the same handle everywhere, design for the strictest rules — 15 characters with no dots works on every platform.
Tips for choosing a handle
- Say it out loud. If you have to spell it twice, simplify it.
- Avoid random numbers unless they mean something (a birth year looks dated; a lucky number can work).
- Think long-term. A niche word is great, but pick one you won’t outgrow.
- Check trademarks before using brand-like names.
💡 Once you’ve chosen a handle, create a scannable QR code card to share it.
